Leeds Magistrates’ Court has imposed a substantial fine upon a private landlord for Fire Safety Breaches.

Leeds City Council prosecuted the landlord for a number of Fire Safety Breaches where:
- tenants were not provided with adequate means of escape the event of a fire
- fire alarm systems were not sufficiently maintained
- escape routes for tenants were not properly maintained and were unnecessarily obstructed.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (‘the Order’ rationalises and consolidates UK fire legislation and shifts the emphasis of fire prevention and the reduction of risk to employers/businesses from the fire authorities.

- Small and medium places of assembly
- Large places of assembly
- Theatres, cinemas and similar premises
- Open air events and venues
- Healthcare premises
- Transport premises and facilities
- Animal premises and stables
- Means of escape for disabled people

The Magistrates:
- fined the landlord £17,500
- ordered him to pay Prosecution Costs in the sum of £2,446.50.
The Magistrates’ Panel was quoted as saying:
“You own 10 properties, your business is in the housing people and it is quite clear and apparent you are deficient in this role and business”.
