New Detection Methods
Devon and Cornwall
Devon and Cornwall Police now employs a ‘Drones Unit’ which enables officers to monitor from the sky motorists’ speeds and to record incidents of dangerous driving.
It is believed that this employment of mechanical drones represents new innovation in the UK, following in the wake of experiments conducted in mainland Europe.
The Force’s Head of Road Policing, Chief Inspector Ben Asprey, said that technology enabled motorists to be tracked from a distance of 3.7 miles, commenting:
‘We can track somebody’s poor driving or poor riding and then we can direct a patrol, stop that vehicle and deal with them accordingly.’
Humberside
Humberside Police now utilise a ‘Traffic Enforcement Van’ which is equipped with hi-tech cameras and AI technology, designed to detect those committing such offences as speeding, using mobile phones whilst driving, failing to wear a seatbelt or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Cameras attached to a tall pole protruding from the roof of the van, are able to observe a vehicle’s interior and identify potential offenders. The recorded images are reviewed by police or civilian workers who identify any offences which have been committed.
During a trial period lasting four hours, twenty-two drivers were observed using mobile phones and thirty-four drivers failing to wear seatbelts.
